What is Fashion?

If you look up “Fashion” in the dictionary, one of its simplest meanings is, “the make, or form of something”. Makes sense… Fashioning something is the way we put items together when we get dressed, and some of us are better at this than others. There are those who want to look trendy, others are attached to their 80’s concert T-shirts and Jeans and some just stick with a classic no frills approach to dressing making sure that all the necessary body parts are covered.

Just because you’re not up on what celebs and the media are telling you are the “latest” things to wear, it doesn’t mean you don’t know fashion!
Fashion is how you express yourself with your own personal style. You can be inspired by what others are doing or you can create your own look.

Wearing stuff just because it’s in fashion??? You don’t have to do that!

My husband Wayne has said that just because a bunch of famous people are walking around with chickens on their heads because it’s the next big thing, doesn’t make it a good idea. It may not work for you (It may not work for them either, but hey… that’s trends for ya!)

Ever notice that the people we admire the most are often not following fashion trends at all.  Some of my all time favourite fashion icons are, Marilyn Monroe, Gwen Stefani, Bryan Ferry, Robert Plant, Scott Weiland, Johnny Depp, Farrah Fawcett, Olivia Newton John… you get the picture. These people all are considered to be fashionable people, but that’s because they have all stepped outside of the norm. They’ve got style… A style that belongs to them.

For me, the best rule is to wear what looks good for my body type and then add my own personal zing!  When trying on clothes, I make sure I FEEL GOOD and COMFORTABLE in them, and that’s more than half the battle.

Joelle, owner of Joelle’s in Burlington, is an example of someone that has trained her staff to help their customers dress for their own style.  I know this because they have used this technique on me and I love it.  Joelle knows me well, and she will show me clothes that suit my style.  She always looks at my face and posture when I come out of the change room and she can tell by my body language if I am comfortable or not, and that’s what she works with.  It’s fantastic!

Here’s a list of local fashion and lifestyle experts I would like to introduce you to. All of these women have their own personal style, and they also have the talent to help you embrace yours!
