Only The Lonely . . .

Another holiday weekend has passed us by and although we may have created some wonderful new memories, many of us are longing for the way things used to be.

The pandemic has become an emotional roller coaster ride in so many ways.  On one hand, the slower pace of life can be a welcome gift but all of the self-reflection and isolation from social gatherings can also have a negative impact on our well-being.

You might live with your family, your spouse, your dog, your cat and still feel lonely.

There is a quote from a poet named Lucie that goes like this –

“There are times in our lives when we feel as though no one truly knows us.”

This feeling is a reality for many of us.  Is there a possibility that we might be getting a little too intimate with our thoughts and feelings through these Covid times?

One of the things I miss the most is just plain old socializing with strangers.  Going out for a walk or to shop and having a little small talk with someone I’ve never met before.  Now it just feels like these engagements are few and far between, most people walk past with their heads down.

Since the beginning of time we were born to be in groups.  There are parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins and close family friends.

It is the perfect set up for access to love, protection, security and a safe place to dream, grow, get encouragement and also be inspired.

As we get older we may experience loss and live with grief but we rebuild.  We recreate groups to fuel us with all of our emotional needs.  We all know that even if we do get married and live happily ever after with one person, we cannot expect that person to fulfill all of our needs. We choose friends, groups and family members with whom to enjoy other hobbies and interests with.

I do feel grateful that we are going through this strange time with modern technology that allows us to connect to our loved ones.  Thank goodness for that.

But . . .

It’s not the same.  Nothing can replace true human face to face connection.  So, if you find yourself struggling with loneliness, you are not alone, it’s another challenge we are all facing together, in a group, experiencing a moment in history that will never be forgotten.

If you haven’t given yourself permission to disengage from your lonely thoughts, I’m giving you that permission now.  Listen to your favourite podcast, go for long walks with inspiring music in your ears, feed your mind and soul with whatever makes you feel better and just forget the rest.

Access to happiness is officially granted!

So true Monica. All the zoom calls and video connections are not the same as hanging out in person. I’m dancing to our boys Daryl and John to keep my spirits up. Peaches howls along!
