It usually starts with a vacation. We travel down to the beautiful beaches of Cuba, perhaps Cayo Coco, looking for sunshine. But for my friend and local advocate, Kim Passmore, one trip revealed a reality that she simply couldn’t ignore. Behind the resorts and sandy shores, a crisis is unfolding for the island’s animal population.
Today, I am so incredibly proud to share Kim’s story and invite you to support an inspired fundraising initiative that is truly bridging the “True North” with the warmth of Cuba: The Northern Lifeline Bracelet Project.
A Story of Action and Compassion
For years, Kim has used her vacation time to support Cayo Coco Animal Rescue (formerly Brussy Rescue). This isn’t just a distant cause for her; she’s had her “boots on the ground,” participating in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) campaigns and visiting the sanctuary. She is a proud friend and supporter of Paula Batista, the rescue’s founder, and the dedicated local Cuban team.
“The love of animals is a universal language,” Kim has shared. “I admire Yadira, Tico, the veterinarians, and everyone who dedicates their lives to saving so many unwanted babies. We are all aware of the many struggles in Cuba lately… yet no animal is refused.”
The Cruel Reality for Animals in Cuba
The situation on the island is heartbreaking, and it is worsening. Cayo Coco Animal Rescue, a Canadian-run, grassroots organization, provides a vital lifeline to the most vulnerable. Due to constant shortages of food, medicine, and basic veterinary care, animals are often the first to suffer.
-
Pets are abandoned when illness strikes or food runs out.
-
The lack of common spay/neuter practices has led to an explosion of overpopulation.
-
With no enforced animal protection laws, street and resort animals endure terrible cruelty and disease with no recourse.
This rescue is their safe haven—a place to heal, to eat, and to find loving homes. But they cannot do it alone.
Introducing: The Northern Lifeline Bracelet
Kim knew she needed to act, so she approached me with an idea. Together, we designed this stunning piece of jewelry to raise the funds necessary for food, medical supplies, and shelter.
Handmade right here in Burlington, Ontario, the “Northern Lifeline” is a symbol of connection and support. Every detail was chosen with intention:
-
The Vibrant Colours: The faceted Czech glass beads in rich reds, deep whites, and brilliant turquoises mirror the colours of both the Cuban flag and the Cayo Coco Animal Rescue logo.
-
The Canadian Hand: If you look closely at the custom, scratch-resistant stainless steel charm, you’ll see the Canadian Maple Leaf integrated into the rescue’s logo—a symbol of our “hand” in supporting this vital mission.
-
The Quality: We have used high-quality crystal, glass, and stainless steel chain to ensure this is a piece you will be proud to wear for years.
The most important part? 100% of all proceeds from every single bracelet go directly to the Cayo Coco Animal Rescue.🐾🇨🇦☀️🇨🇺🐾
