Right in My Backyard . . .

Wayne and I have lived in our neighbourhood for almost 15 years.  During that time we have explored many beautiful trails, there is nature all around where we live.

One thing we have always wanted to do is to explore Bronte Creek, as in, get right down to the creek and walk along the water.  We’ve never made time to do it  –  so crazy.

We finally decided we needed to get down there but had no idea how.  I texted a neighbour who had long since moved from the area because I knew she went down there for walks sometimes.

She said, “It’s easy, just walk up the path, turn left to where the rich people live and you will see a giant  hole in the fence, that’s where you go down to the creek.”  Wayne and I chuckled at her text but both swore, there was no way there was a hole in the fence, we had walked that path 10,000 times!

Sure enough, there was a hole in the fence and all the cars we had noticed that were parked on that street over the years, they were not there because of a wild neighbourhood party.  These were the cars of people who were going down to the creek.

As we walked down we were delighted to see that we had found a little piece of magic, right in our own backyard.  How is it that we had never noticed this beautiful spot in all these years?

We explored the area, took a bunch of photos and even noticed salmon swimming upstream in the creek.

Watching the salmon made me a little sad, I thought, this is what they do? Swim upstream year after year to spawn and then potentially die from exhaustion?

How heartbreaking.  All week I’ve been thinking about the little things that I do that wear me out and leave me feeling drained.  Not everything we do deserves all of our time and attention.

My friend Lisa McDonald posted a great quote last week that really put this into perspective.

“If you give yourself 30 days to clean your home, it will take you 30 days.  But if you give yourself 3 hours, it will take 3 hours.  The same applies to your goals, ambitions and potential.”

I think one of the main reasons we never got down to the creek in our years of living here is because we were just spending too much time on something else.

So, I guess that’s what they mean when they say, “spend time on the things that matter”
