Love Is Love

Walking around the neighbourhood this month I’ve seen the most beautiful PRIDE flags on people’s lawns.  I noticed new colours on them in the shape of an arrowhead.  I had no clue what the new colours were about or why the flag had changed.

I decided to “Google” it of course and learned that this flag was created back in 2018.  Why did I not know about this?  Surprisingly enough, talking to other friends, this was the first time they had seen the new flag as well.

So, if you’re not sure about the whole story either, here it is –

Designed in 2018 by Graphic Designer, Daniel Quasar, the new flag places a greater emphasis on “inclusion and progression.”

The Progress Pride flag includes black and brown stripes to represent marginalised LGBT communities of colour, along with soft pink, light blue and white which are used on the Transgender Pride Flag.

The people recognized in these colours played a huge role in the birth of PRIDE, without them there would actually be no PRIDE.

Growing up in the 80’s I remember the struggle some of my classmates had around “coming out”.  Some were ashamed to tell their parents and knew there was a chance they would be ridiculed at school so they kept things quiet.  They only told their very best friends and they would hang out after school in homes with liberal and accepting parents where they felt safe.  I’m proud to say, that’s the kind of house I grew up in.

This month I really wanted to recognize a group that was helping our youth here in Halton.  I’ve always felt that this age group has the biggest struggle, not only are they working through their own emotions but they can feel alienated from their friends and family when they realize they are different.

There is an amazing organization called Positive Space Network here in Halton.  They are an organization who builds community and creates safer spaces for 2SLGBTQ+ youth ages 6-24 in the Halton Region.  They provide youth focused programming, providing mental health support and cultivating community partnerships.  They are actively working towards a future in which diverse 2SLGBTQ+ youth, individuals and families, live in a welcoming and supportive world.

Now that’s a place I want to support!

For the month of June I have designed these very special #LoveIsLove earrings (including all of the colours on the Progress Pride flag) where $5 from each pair will go directly towards Positive Space Network.  They will use our donation to continue to provide community, programs and services for our youth.

If you would like to donate to them directly, click HERE.

If you would like to support our PRIDE initiative click HERE to order your earrings.

Thank you all so much!

Monica
